Moldy Strawberries: Form and Fragmentation in a Time of Crisis

Editorial

2024

Moldy Strawberries is a collection of stories by celebrated Brazilian writer Caio Fernando Abreu.

The landscape onto which the original book appeared in Brazil included the AIDS epidemic, the final throes of dictatorship, an external debt crisis and economic recession, and a wide range of geopolitical and ecological anxieties.

The book is divided into three main sections and categorized by colors that symbolize the different stages of mold: O Mofo (The Mold) — in magenta; Os Morangos (The Strawberries) — in green; and Morangos Mofados (Moldy Strawberries) — in cyan. With a pop and modernist language, the circles scattered throughout the pages represent the mold and assume a role of authority as they infiltrate the paragraphs of each chapter. The condensed sans-serif typeface is paired with a classic serif, contributing to an identity that is both contemporary and timeless.
